Located in the northwest of Mallorca, Sóller became prosperous thanks to the great abundance of citrus crops. In the 19th century, when the area was isolated from the rest of Mallorca by the mountains, oranges were exported to France from Port de Sóller. A large number of Sollerics migrated to France, and returned to the island with great fortunes that they invested in building some of the magnificent modernist buildings that can be seen in the center of town today.
